Cities, Castles and Culture
October 17, 2018
September is perfect for a Spanish Sojourn with cities of France and Portugal added in. Our clients went on a 15-days tour, starting at #Nice, in #France.
Unsurprisingly, they found Nice to be a nice city living up to its fascination as a tourist destination – the Mediterranean coastline, pleasant weather along with #Cannes and #Monaco as the playground of the rich and famous. But it’s the history of the city that stole their hearts; founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and Italians who left their mark, raided by Arabs and Irish through the years, leaving a melting pot of cultures in its varied cityscape. For a taste, there’s a Russian Orthodox Christian Church, an Italian Fortress, a Roman Amphitheatre, and an active Franciscan Monastery!
Other highlights of France included walking the red carpet that usually leads to the #CannesFilmFestival, a visit to St Paul de Vence, a small hilltop city area, and driving the legendary #Formula1 circuit in #MonteCarlo.
Next stop – #Lisbon which stands out in its friendly air. There is a fondness for people and our clients felt a palpable connection with our loveable Goans. They found the best views of the city from atop #StGeorgeCastle. They headed on to #Sintra, which is like a page from a fairy-tale with its rippling mountains, thick forests replete with ferns and lichen and exotic gardens and glistening palaces before making their way through the cities of #Spain.
When in Spain, eat and drink as the Spanish do – our clients feasted on smoked salmon and cured Iberian ham tapas, vert and sangria, and Venetian Paella.
Starting with #Madrid and nearby #Toledo and #Seville, their list of must-see monuments and sights included the Church of Saint Mary (Cathedral of the Patron Saint), the most famous paintings of #ElGreco, the Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca, and the #RoyalAlcazar, and of course the famous #MadridArtTriangle.
They drove to #Ronda through #Cordoba with a guide and driver organised by us, exploring the highlights of the UNESCO listed city centre with the mesmerising #Mezquite, the Roman Bridge and the Jewish Quarter in Cordoba. Ronda turned out to be their best experience on their visit with the charm of the city, the famous #RondaBullRing, and a delightful tapas trail. A horse-drawn carriage ride and wonderful lively explanations by the local guide we organised sealed the deal.
They made their way to #Granada through #Marbella and #Málaga, experiencing the #SierraNevada mountains in full glory and a beautiful seaside drive from Marbella to #Nerja. Final stop – #Barcelona, to experience the pull and thrill of everything Spain and #Gaudi’s unmistakable creations of architecture. We also organised a delightful dinner of rabbit paella and mushrooms at the famous #MareaAltaRestaurant for our client’s birthday; the perfect end to this personal and memorable #Getaway.
